Why Should I join the Youth Summer Programs?

What are your plans after your undergraduate degree? Are you thinking about being a lawyer, doctor or medical researcher? If you’re interested in learning at one of the world’s great law and medical schools, or just want to have a great summer learning about the subjects you’re passionate about, the YSP is for you!

How do I apply for the YSP?
It’s easy! All you have to do is to follow the link under Register Now!, fill out all the information and pay the registration and module fees. Make sure to follow all the instructions on the registration document! Once you complete your application you will receive a confirmation email and be directed to fill out any supplemental forms and documents required to complete your registration. Enrolment is filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so we encourage you to apply as soon as registration opens! If you have any questions during this process please contact us.

How much can I expect my commute to cost?
This varies depending on where you are located. For more information about arriving to and from campus please look at the plan your route page.

Will a Certificate be provided upon completion?

Yes!!! A certificate will be provided upon completion of each Module. The certificate will serve as a validation of your hard work and participation in the MED YSP program, which can be a wonderful addition on your resume to be used for future applications. Please Note: for online-MED YSP 2020, an electronic copy of the certificate will be provided instead of the paper format.

Can I live on residence during the YSP?

The YSP does NOT offer residence accommodation. Students must provide their own accommodation, transport to and from the program each day, and meals. The University of Toronto Student Housing Services Website (www.studentlife.utoronto.ca/hs) and individual residences at the UofT St. George Campus (http://www.studentlife.utoronto.ca/hs/st-george-residences), which are great resources that show what options are available around campus. Many UofT residences offer summer housing options. Students have also stayed at hotels, family stays, short-term rentals, or with other students.

I’m an international student. Can I register for the YSP?

Of course!

However, international students must provide their own accommodation, transport to and from the program each day, and meals. We also require international students to provide confirmation of their purchase of health insurance for duration of their stay at registration.

International Students need to be aware that all classes are taught in English. There is no language support in the YSP. Students’ English level should be at a High-Intermediate level. International students looking for a residential program with language support should investigate the University of Toronto’s International English Programs, also offered in the summer.

If you have any questions regarding language requirements or student acceptance, please contact us.

I’m from out of town. Will there be someone to pick me up?
No. Students must transport themselves to and from the program every day. Please visit the plan your route to program page for more information about transportation to and from campus.

Do I have to attend the entire program?
You can choose to attend only one, two, three, or all four modules offered by the program. The choice is yours! If you choose to attend multiple modules, they do not have to occur concurrently. For example, you could choose to attend a module offered in the first week of the program and a module offered in the third week of the program. You can also attend only Med YSP, only Law YSP or a mixture of both!

How many students can register for the YSP?

There is limited space available in both Med and Law YSP. For the Law YSP, there is a maximum enrolment of 50 to 60 students per week (depending on the module). For Med YSP there is a maximum enrolment of 120 students per week. The program tends to fills up quickly, so we recommend registering as early as possible.

When is the application deadline?
There is no official deadline for applications to the YSP. The programs, however, are available to a limited numbers of students. Therefore, we HIGHLY suggest that you register as soon as possible because registration is on a first come, first served basis.

Is there a waiting list?

Yes as spots may open up if a student cancels/withdraws from the program.

Once a module is full the waiting list opens up. You can sign up for the module specific waiting list using the same link that you would to register. You need to sign up for the waiting list for all modules you are interested in attending. There is NO FEE associated with joining the waiting list. Only if a spot opens up and you still wish to join would you at that point be directed to pay the fees.

I'm on the waiting list, now what?

Should a spot open up in a specific module we email the parent/guardians of the first student on that module’s waiting list. If you are contacted about an opening, you need to confirm your registration, complete all forms, and pay all fees within the timeline indicated. Failure to do so will mean the spot may be offered to another student on the waiting list.

Please be sure to check your email (sometimes junk and spam folders!) as openings can occur right up until the program start date.

If you are currently on a module waiting list but wish to be removed, please let us know.

I have registered for the program but haven't received my confirmation email. What do I do?

Confirmation emails are sent automatically from ACTIVE, our online registration system. Be sure to check the email that was listed on initial registration, including your junk/spam folders. If you are still having difficulty locating this email, please let us know.

Does the YSP offer either high school or university credit?

No, the YSP are non-credit courses – however, they’ll look great on your resume and in your university applications!

Can I leave campus on my own?
No, aside from commuting to and from campus, if students need to leave campus at any point during the day, they will need to be signed out by a parent/guardian by sending us an email AT LEAST 24hrs in advance. A staff member must be informed when you leave and upon your return. Please be aware that there are rules at the YSP that must be followed by all students (even if you are 18). For more information about sign-outs please see our page on Sign-outs, Illnesses, and Typical Day Schedule.

What will I need in the way of spending money?
All program materials are provided. Aside from the cost of transport to and from the program, students may wish to buy lunch, snacks, or drinks on campus. Students are encouraged to bring a lunch with them, but if they are planning on buying lunch, we suggest a budget of $10-$15/meal.

I’m a vegetarian, will there be food options for me? What about Halal? Kosher?

Toronto is a great city for all kinds of foods even if you have dietary restrictions! Feel free to get in touch with us if you have any concerns about eating on or around campus. We are happy to discuss options.

Is there a dress code?

During class, students enrolled in the Med YSP are REQUIRED to wear closed toed shoes and long pants (jeans are fine) during all labs. In addition, if you have long hair please bring a hair tie or another method to tie hair back.

While there is no dress code for the majority of the time spent at the YSP, Law YSP students will need to wear “business casual” clothing for field trips to law firms and courthouses.
